The Gaiwan

Originating in Sichuan during the Tang Dynasty and flourishing in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty, the Gaiwan is an indispensable tool for tea enthusiasts. Its wide top and narrow base allow for an unobstructed view of the unfurling tea leaves and the captivating color of the brewed liquor. As acclaimed Chinese writer Lu Xun 鲁迅 once famously stated in his essay "Drinking Tea," "To drink good tea, one must use a Gaiwan."

This versatile vessel serves both as a teapot and a personal teacup. When used as a personal cup, simply add tea leaves, pour in hot water, and let it steep to your preferred strength. The lid can then be used to gently push aside the leaves, creating a small opening for effortless sipping.

Blue and White Porcelain

Crafted from pristine white porcelain, this exquisite Gaiwan features delicate patterns meticulously painted with cobalt oxide. Upon firing, the cobalt transforms into a vibrant blue, resulting in the iconic "blue and white" aesthetic that defines this cherished porcelain art form.

A Symbol of Noble Virtues

The renowned British scholar Joseph Needham once described East Asian civilization as a "bamboo civilization." In Chinese culture, bamboo embodies profound symbolism: elegance, purity, unyielding integrity, and resilience. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai eloquently captured the essence of bamboo with the verse, "Not learning from the willow's decay, it forever preserves its chaste heart." This Gaiwan beautifully integrates the graceful bamboo motif with the classic blue and white design. Its distinctive, non-circular shape with four distinct angles further accentuates the noble and upright character that bamboo represents.
